A place to sit…

We've all heard the cliche “to follow in someone's footsteps” but now that I am literally following in my Grandmother's it’s taken a totally different meaning.

For starters I am realizing that someone will walk over just about anything to get somewhere: cactuses, icebergs, sharp lava rocks...

But what really counts is where they decide to sit. The place that made them want to pause, sketch and spend some time. Maybe it's the following in someone's “butt-prints” that really counts?

The ranch that almost wasn’t!

Lu sketched the Darien Ranch and the surrounding West Elk Mountains in the summer of 1972, as shown above. When I met the owner, Larry Darien, in the spring of 2024, he told us that before my grandparents stayed there, this beautiful area was nearly converted into a golf course! What a relief that it was not and to this day, it is still a working ranch, and horses! It is now protected and will never be developed!
