24 Day Watercolor Sketching Series
This daily series of short (10-15 mins each) tutorials will develop your skills gradually over the course of 24 days.
If you are new to watercolor, sketching or just starting out — we will build into more complex paintings as we go.
By the end of this 24 day series, you will have created 24 individual paintings that all come together like a puzzle to form one big picture at the end!
Each tutorial will focus on the outdoors, ranging from landscapes to the activities enjoyed out in nature.
Designed by Max Romey to suit all skill levels.
Self-paced and lifetime access after signing up.
Recommended supplies:
Pencil
Waterproof black ink pen

*Each sketch is a square and you can scale up or down the provided line art to make the final painting as little or as big as you’d like! As long as each mini painting (puzzle piece) is the same size square, it will all come together in the end!

Materials and Supplies for 24 Day Sketching Series
This short video we will walk through the materials and art supplies I will be using throughout this 24 day sketching and watercolor tutorial series.
-
Trace and Transfer the Sketch
This short tutorial will walk you through how to trace and transfer a sketch onto a piece of watercolor paper.
-
Day 1 of 24
It’s always hard to make the first mark! To get started we will begin with a simple mountain scape.
-
Day 2 of 24
In this lesson we will see how creating a mountain scene can help us create a seascape! I chose a kayaker, but feel free to exercise your imagination! Maybe you love to sail, swim, or maybe you love dolphins! Feel free to create what YOU want to see.
-
Day 3 of 24
Be brave, grab the big brush as we will learn how to give a simple mountain scene some extra depth. Today will be loose, colorful and flowy!
-
Day 4 of 24
Lets be real, artist-to-artist, clouds are kinda hard despite how “simple” they appear. So let’s dive in, have some fun, make a mistake or ten, and see the actual silver lining!
-
Day 5 of 24
Do you have your Christmas tree up yet? How do you feel about painting a tree? With any of these tutorials, feel free to take the creative reigns, and replace the doves with your favorite birds (or maybe not even a bird… baby dragon anyone?) Get ready to take flight either way, and brave a slightly more detailed painting. I promise you will soar!
-
Day 6 of 24
Today we will dip into a slightly more complex subject, but it’ll be ok, I promise! Because who doesn’t love to paint cute baby fox?!?! With that said, if you feel inclined to paint an owl, or a baby bear… this is YOUR painting! The same principles will apply no matter the cute creature!
-
Day 7 of 24
I promise a chuckle or ten in today’s slightly longer tutorial. Where we learn to paint mischievous squirrels, despite the distractions of the day (or studio kitty). We’ll also dive deeper into building that confidence with creating depth between lights, mediums and darks.
-
Day 8 of 24
Today we will calm the mind with a “reflective” sketch of a cute cabin tucked away in the forest. Just writing that out soothes my soul. One of my favorite attributes of watercolor is the magic that happens when you give it permission to flow, bloom and become. So today we will practice keeping it loose, fun and relaxing…
-
Day 9 of 24
Painting people. It’s scary, but if they are really far away and tiny, it’s less scary! Today we take to the slopes and slide right into a scene of little people having fun, or at least trying to! Therefore, have a little fun yourself! What if instead of skiers it was a group of people tubing, or ditch the ski area, and it’s a toboggan hill! Make the story your own!
-
Day 10 of 24
Today’s tutorial is a little bit like painting a dream or a wish. Honoring those winter days where maybe you can’t get outside. So we will use the power of art to bring the outdoors to wherever you might be. We’ll find the warmth in a wintery scene, and also play around with loosening our technique to allow the paint to work its magic.
-
Day 11 of 24
Today we travel from winter to a warm day on the river. I chose a fly fisherman, but fill free to mix this up with your own imagination. The goal for today is to embrace the power of watercolor paints to create a lovely watery landscape, like this river scene. We will focus on loose washes, dabbing in colors to achieve different effects and for sure embrace the little mishaps along the way.
-
Day 12 of 24
Today we give ourselves permission to paint outside and around the lines. Today is intended to be very light and springy. Loose and flowy. We learn to give the watercolor some space to do what it does best.
-
Day 13 of 24
Today’s lesson, I hope, feels like a ray of light to your day! We are going to go boldly into this scene. Feel the freedom to explore and push your comfort with color and water today!
-
Day 14 of 24
Let’s do something we’ve never done, together! Deep diving into some deep colors to create an underwater world. Now, if you have been cave diving and are now painting cave diving — WOW! That is pretty wild! If you want, you could make this a little sub, or a deep sea creature… let your imagination flow!
-
Day 15 of 24
Can you believe we have moved past the half way mark and officially have less than 10 days to go! To celebrate we are going to let loose with this seemingly simple mountain scene and share with you how the alpine glow appears in my imagination. A photograph can never do it justice, in my opinion. Watercolor paint rewards the brave and today I ask you to be brave and let the colors flow into a magical scene you can “stand back” and soak up!
-
Day 16 of 24
I love puzzles. I love even more when I complete the boarder to the puzzle. It is such a pivotal moment in bringing all the pieces together, and today we do just that! Can you believe we are nearing the end? Once again I will ask you to be brave and bold with your colors. Have fun!
-
Day 17 of 24
Today is a cliff-hanger! Quite literally, as we become a touch more daring with our composition. This puzzle is beginning to really come together and while we do want to find some common ground with our color choices here on out, if you don’t dig rock climbing, how do you feel about bats?!?
-
Day 18 of 24
Bears are apart of life in Alaska, and a lot of fun to paint, too! Today we tackle a slightly more dynamic scene that requires a little bit of patience and will build on earlier skills. I’ve been fortunate to witness these “cute from a safe distance,” so this one is special for me and so happy I can share it with you.
-
Day 19 of 24
Birds on a wire enjoying a blue bird day! We dip into what feels like a summer memory, as we head closer towards winter. We will also lean more into wet-on-wet technique, which can always be a little scary, but together we’ve got this! For a fun challenge, choose to paint birds you would see in your own backyard!
-
Day 20 of 24
The bigger picture really starts to come together with today’s painting. I’m so excited! We will level-up our wet-on-wet technique with this bird’s eye view. With only a couple more days to go, it’s all coming together!
-
Day 21 of 24
Today’s adventure takes us under the sea and we are going to paint a bunch of cute clown fish! Because why not! Of course you could always make these seahorses or maybe an octopus. So lets dive in, draw on all the nifty skills we’ve collected up till this point and remover to have fun, do not worry about the mistakes (they could make for a cool sea creature after all)!
-
Day 22 of 24
We are nearing the end of our adventure and today’s sketch feels like a long exhale. That feeling you have after a day’s hike and you come to an opening in the trail, revealing how beautiful our planet is.
-
Day 23 of 24
We are going to take flight today and try something new with masking fluid. Something watercolor artist use to help preserve white details in a painting. Now, please do NOT fret if you do not have access to this. It’s not required, nor is it always the best option. But if this is something you have and been nervous to use it, today’s sketch will help you play with it in a small way.

Day 24 of 24
Friends, this is an exciting day. We have been on a 24-day adventure, together! Thank you for being brave and spending all this time with me. On this final day we choose our own ending. The provided sketch has an intentional blank space for you to decide what to paint in, bringing the bigger picture all together 🥰!

Thank You For Sketching Along!
Wow! What a wild 24 days it’s been, Thank you!
